A weekend of sports in the Ziller Valley

The sad fact is, there are only two days in a weekend: Saturday and Sunday. However, by spending these precious 48 hours of freedom in the sports paradise that is Mayrhofen in the Ziller Valley, you can feel like you have enjoyed a much longer holiday. Mayrhofen offers such a range of outdoor sports, it is the perfect destination for an active minibreak. From adrenaline-fueled canyoning tours to competitive tennis matches – read on for inspiration for your next active weekend in Mayrhofen.

One valley, limitless activities

As you enter the valley, one thing is clear: this is the home of sport. The mountains on the left and right keep a close watch as you drive the 32 km from Strass to Mayrhofen. Surrounded by 3000m+ peaks and the fascinating mountains of the “Tuxer Voralpen”, you’ll pass several sports fields and are sure to see many cyclists and hikers enjoying their sports. The diverse and beautiful nature as well as the well-designed infrastructure makes Mayrhofen a true paradise for summer sports vacations.

Day 1: Serve up beautiful scenery

The almost unlimited sports on offer in the Ziller Valley means you are spoilt for choice. That’s exactly why a sports minibreak in Mayrhofen is so unique: every wish is catered for and it’s the perfect place to try out new activities. Those who decide to kick off their weekend with a ball sport and coordination practice, should head to Mayrhofen’s tennis club or, alternatively, the tennis centre in Hippach with its many outdoor courts. At the foot of the local mountains Action Mount Penken and the Leisure Mount Ahorn, tennis aces can enjoy a vigorous match amidst incredible scenery. If you want to brush up on your technique, or are a novice tennis player, experienced coaches are available for private or group lessons. Improve your serve, forehand and backhand so that your next game ends in victory: “game, set and match”!

After two hours of intensive sport, your next adventure awaits… a cool down in a glacial waterfall. What could be better?

Day 1: Wet ‘n’ wild adrenaline kick

Leave the tennis courts behind you, and start out into the wilderness. When you’ve finished wiping the sweat from your brow, Mayrhofen’s gorges provide the perfect refreshment: Canyoning. Action Club Zillertal offers canyoning tours for all levels. Once you’ve tightened your harness, wriggled into a wetsuit and put on a helmet, you’re ready to jump straight into the river rapids! The Zemm gorge in Mayrhofen is one of the best locations for a canyoning tour. With a mix of narrow crevices, imposing waterfalls and exciting abseil descents, it delivers the perfect conditions for thrill-seekers. A Canyoning tour with a capable and experienced guide is an unforgettable experience for beginners and experienced watersports fans, and should be a part of every active holiday.

After such an action-packed day, you are sure to sleep well, dreaming of the adventures that tomorrow will bring!

Day 2: Swing from the treetops

On your second day of sports, we recommend trying the first high ropes course in the Ziller Valley. The experienced guides from Mountainsports accompany guests, young and old, up into the forest treetops to balance on obstacles at the dizzying heights of 8m – 16m above the ground. Swinging from the treetops next to an 85-metre-deep gorge is guaranteed to get your heart thumping. There are two courses to choose from (either red or black) with 30 wobbly obstacles to conquer. Not only does the high ropes course promise to deliver a real adrenaline kick, it also builds your self-confidence and team spirit.

After a morning in the treetops, come back to earth for a gentle jog to finish your weekend of sports.

Day 2: Explore the region at a jog

On the mountain or in the valley? In Mayrhofen you are really spoilt for choice when it comes to jogging routes. From flat circuits to steep trail-running routes, what could be better than combining holiday sightseeing with some fitness training? Shady forests, crystal-clear rivers and lush meadows are enough to make every runner’s heart beat faster. Our recommendation for endurance runners is the new Easy Trail, a 24km route, covering 100 altitude metres. The trail leads through the villages of Schwendau, Hippach, Ramsau and Mayrhofen, past historic churches and impressive waterfalls. The perfect end to an action-packed weekend in Mayrhofen, the home of summer sports.
