RISE&FALL, a race against the clock - part 1

4x430 altitude metres of intense struggle and challenges lay before the athletes of the 80 teams competing in RISE&FALL. This awesome sporting event which kicks off the winter season in Mayrhofen on the 16th December 2017, pushes the competitors to their limits. We find out from the athletes themselves exactly how they prepare to compete in their chosen discipline. The hard training doesn’t begin in Autumn, but requires endurance and fighting spirit throughout the whole year!

As the skier in his team, Martin Hungbaur will race the final leg of the relay competition. Martin is 44 years old and comes from Augsburg in Bavaria. This year will be the fourth time that he and his team have competed in RISE&FALL in Mayrhofen, and he is determined to give his all for his teammates.

Initially, the team, consisting of Martin Hungbaur, Franz Fischer (mountain bike), Markus Tyroller (ski touring) and Christian Ladreiter (paragliding), thought that the event was just a bit of fun. However, at the briefing and social evening before the competition, they came to realise that it is in fact a professional and serious competition, whose entrants include some of the top athletes in the world in each sport discipline. It was something of a wake-up call for Hungbaur and his teammates who are just amateur sportsmen. Despite this, they have always been welcomed into the large RISE&FALL family and felt respected as competitors. Experiencing the feeling of belonging with the best of the best is one of the greatest attractions of the race.

However, Martin warns that serious preparation for the race is an absolute must. His team train throughout the summer by going mountain biking and running whenever they can. At the first snowfall, the skier and ski tourer hit the mountains to get in as much training as possible. Each athlete tries to be in peak condition to be able to give the race his all.

The aim of Martin and his team is to compete in RISE&FALL alongside the best in the world and other ambitious amateur athletes and gauge their speed against these top competitors. Every year they also hope to finish a few places higher in the race rankings. Of course, each athlete is highly competitive, but safety always comes first. At the end of the day, the team all have families and have to go back to their day jobs on Monday.
