Although it’s not perhaps the most spectacular event of the winter season, the ski day still definitely deserves a mention. The idea to hold such an event came about many years ago and, through the hard work and passion of the volunteer members of the Mayrhofen Ski Club, the tradition continues today.
Whose idea was it?
Mayrhofen Ski School was founded in 1954 by the former ski racer Riki Spieß and her husband Ernst. One year later they started the world’s first ski kindergarten. And it was Riki Spieß who, 50 years ago, first had the idea for a children’s ski day. The Tyrolean Ski Association organises the event, which is hosted by the Mayrhofen Ski Club , which was founded in 1924. The current president of the ski club is none other than Uli Spieß, also a former ski racer. Furthermore, he happens to be the son of Riki, who sadly passed away last autumn.
Big fun for little athletes
The competitors in this annual competition include the best up-and-coming ski racers in the state of Tyrol, who demonstrate their skills and speed on the race course. In order to take part, athletes must be registered with an Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) club. Click here for further information on how to enter. The number of competitors is testament to the event’s popularity. Around 300 racers born between 2005 and 2009 will be competing in this year’s event. That’s a considerable number of Tyrol’s young skiing talent. For those who want to succeed in the sport, starting early is essential. Ski stars such as Benjamin Raich, Marlies Schild, Mario Matt and Stephan Eberharter all realised this. All four competed in the Tyrolean Children’s Ski Day in their early years before going on to be very successful on the World Cup circuit.
The boys and girls who prove their mettle on the race course need both courage and skill. The race is timed by the Mayrhofen Ski Club and supervised by 5 adjudicators and judges, one race director and a course manager\. There are trophies for each age group and the overall champion also receives a pair of race skis with bindings. This amazing prize is donated by the company Atomic.
