It’s raining cats and dogs! Luckily, I duck inside the arrival/ departure hall of Cologne’s main train station just in time to escape the downpour. I shiver a little, feeling goose bumps on my skin. All around me people are rushing about: that’s the hustle, bustle and stress of everyday life in a big city. I can’t wait to escape! Full of anticipation, I head to my platform. The ÖBB Nightjet is just arriving. Its 8.44pm. The doors of the train open, I get on and make my way to the cabin I have reserved. There’s no seat but a fold-down bed is already made up for me. The bedsheets are clean and smell fresh and inviting. A welcome pack containing soap, towel, slippers, snacks and water awaits me. Here, the guest is king. I feel really at home.
My Mobile Suite
The train judders. Just in time I grab the door, close it and hold tight. The Nightjet of the Österreichischen Bundesbahn (ÖBB) is departing. I’m on my way! I’ve hardly taken my seat when the conductor, a young man from Vienna, comes by. He shows me the important things in my cabin: light switches, plugs, sink etc. I have my very own mobile suite! I unpack my wash bag and clean my teeth before lying down and closing my eyes. I am comfortable and warm, the pillow is soft, the bed covers are cosy. Everything around me is quiet and relaxing as I drift off to sleep. Am I flying?
Breakfast in Bed
Suddenly, there’s a knock at my door. I startle. The conductor peers round the door. “Breakfast?”, he asks, smiling. I nod “yes please”, and am given a tray filled with hot coffee, two fresh bread rolls, ham and cheese, jam and yoghurt. Breakfast in bed – I could get used to this! Outside the sun has come up and it’s as if I’m in another world. Am I still dreaming? The mountains are so close that I feel as though, if I reached out my hand, I could touch them. Amazing! I open the window. It’s still cool and the air smells fresh. From the beams of the morning sun, I can tell it’s going to be a hot summer’s day. My watch shows the time: 8.10am.
Fantasy World? No, Tyrol!
The train slows as I reach my destination; Jenbach in Tyrol. I’m ready to get off in another world – magical and bursting with nature! My expectations aren’t just met – they’re exceeded! The first views are absolutely stunning. The mountains have a calming effect, silent and strong.
I glance around. Where to next? Then I spy a friendly-looking, tall man with a face full of laughter lines wearing a t-shirt with the logo “Four Seasons” and holding a sign saying: “Mayrhofen”. That’s where I want to go! Peter is my personal chauffeur for today and will take me comfortably by “Four Seasons” taxi to Mayrhofen. As he drives, I look out of the window. The closer we get to Mayrhofen, the more incredible the scenery gets. Could it be I’m still dreaming?
