Pleasure Route - Zillertal hay milk cheese at Brandberg
The Bergmähderweg (Mountain Pasture Trail) starts at Gasthaus Thanner in Brandberg and leads past the meadows of Brandberg - an idyllic round walk - initially in the direction of Kolmhaus, turning off shortly before Gasthof Steinerkogel. On the way to Steinerkogel, walkers can admire the centuries old cultural landscapes in all their diversity, mostly hand-mown slopes, unprocessed dry soil and grassy field boundaries. Cows graze here and on the higher meadows in summer, the milk from which is delivered daily to the Zillertal Dairy. After an easy ascent of around 2 hours, take the left fork in the trail down to the 1,269 m high Steinerkogel and mountain guesthouse of the same name.
Tip: a portion of delicious Kaiserschmarrn (chopped, sweet pancake) made, of course, with hay milk will boost flagging energy levels. Continue along the Bergmähderweg Trail before walking down to Brandberg, where you can stop for refreshments at the old Gasthof Thanner. From here, you can catch the bus back down to Mayrhofen and visit the ErlebnisSennerei Dairy (bus stop: Laubichl).
